What is a solitaire necklace?

A solitaire is a single stone with nothing set around it. No halo, no cluster, no second stone competing. It is the oldest and plainest way to set a stone, and it is popular for exactly that reason: there is nothing to date it and nothing to clash with whatever else you are wearing. It works alone at the collarbone, and it works as the bottom layer under a shorter chain.
